Agoston Haraszthy

Agoston Haraszthy (;〔McGinty, p. 480 n. 1〕 (ハンガリー語:Haraszthy Ágoston), ; August 30, 1812, Pest, Hungary〔http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mV45dpw30Ms/T8esyHfn9ZI/AAAAAAAAAAY/0n_RlfXr8Lk/s1600/aus-map.jpg〕〔http://www.philatelicdatabase.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/map-austrian-empire-gall-inglis-1871.jpg〕 – July 6, 1869, Corinto, Nicaragua) was a Hungarian-American traveler, writer, town-builder, and pioneer winemaker in Wisconsin and California, often referred to as the "Father of California Viticulture,"〔Pinney, Thomas. ''A History of Wine in America''. Berkeley: University of California Press, 1989, p. 269.〕 or the "Father of Modern Winemaking in California". One of the first men to plant vineyards in Wisconsin, he was the founder of the Buena Vista vineyards (now Buena Vista Carneros) in Sonoma, California, and an early writer on California wine and viticulture.
He was the first Hungarian to settle permanently in the United States and only the second to write a book about the country in his native language.〔Baptismal Register, Terézváros parish, Budapest; McGinty, Brian. ''Strong Wine: The Life and Legend of Agoston Haraszthy'', pp. 4, 11.〕 He is remembered in Wisconsin as the founder of the oldest incorporated village in the state. He also operated the first commercial steamboat on the upper Mississippi River. In San Diego he is remembered as the first town marshal and the first county sheriff.〔McGinty, pp. 1-2.〕 In California he introduced more than three hundred varieties of European grapes.
==Birth==
Haraszthy was born in 1812, in Pest, Hungary. He was the only child of Károly Haraszthy and his wife, Anna Maria (née Fischer). It had been previously claimed that he was born in Futog, Hungary, but that was disproved in 1995.〔Baptismal Register, Terézváros parish baptismal records, Budapest; McGinty, Brian. ''Strong Wine: The Life and Legend of Agoston Haraszthy'', pp. 4, 11.〕
